VABS 3.6 Reduces Realistic Composite Blade Modeling to Seconds

Submitted by allanwood on

AnalySwift, LLC, a leading provider of efficient high-fidelity modeling software for aerospace and energy composites and other advanced materials, announced today the release of VABS 3.6. This is the latest version of VABS, which is the tool of choice for efficient and accurate modeling of composite slender structures such as wind turbine blades, helicopter rotor blades, high aspect ratio wings, composite bridges, and other slender structural components.

WCCM 2012 - Mini symposium on Computational Damage Mechanics of Composite Materials

Submitted by malfano on

I am co-organizing a mini-symposium on « Computational damage mechanics of composite materials »  in the World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM 2012) with Dr. Gilles Lubineau at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Dr. Glaucio H. Paulino at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

WORKSHOP: Image-based Simulation for Biomechanics, Materials Applications, and Reverse Engineering

This workshop is aimed at those interested in 3D reconstruction from radiology images, and in using 3D image data (as obtained from CT, Micro-CT, MRI and Ultrasound) to generate Rapid Prototyping, CAD, and Finite Element models.

Participants will learn:

•    how to generate computer models from your 3D image data

•    how to import and position CAD files in the image data

flexural rigidities of orthotropic composite laminates

Dear all,

Iam working in composite orthotropic laminates consists of many plies having different material properties in each ply. How to determine or calculate the flexural rigidity (D) of this laminate by transforming these composite into an isotropic model. The idea is that flexural rigidity of the orthotropic laminate is being smeared into a single isotropic formulation.

For instance: if I have three plies:

Ply1 : D1x and D1y

Ply2: D2x and D2y

Ply3: D3x and D3y

energy balance of surface-based cohesive of composite under impact in Absqus 6-10

Submitted by moustachiio on

Hi there! I am really new to Abaqus and I need to model a composite
laminated crash cone under impact to a flat solid wall (analytical
surface is used). I modelled a cone with a layers of conventional shell
elements with hashin failure criteria and surface-based cohesive
behaviour as interaction between layers representing the interface of
composite laminates. The model runs successfully but once I checked the
energy balance, the damage dissipation energy from the cohesive, it
turned out to be NEGATIVE (I think this is wrong).

Why fracture and failure mechanics is so important? From Southwest Boeing 737 cracks to future Boeing 787 safety

Submitted by L. Roy Xu on

Even Jay Leno tried to understand fatigue cracks at his Yesterday’s Tonight Show, our research on fracture and failure mechanics is received great attention from the general public. Read more after this photo--
