We are seeking a dedicated postdoc on advanced material modelling in the textile domain. In this project you will dive deep into a cutting-edge research area, exploring the complexities of advanced textile material modelling. You will be part of a team of 4 researchers (3 PhDs and one postdoc) who will all work on this large research project. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to support the 3 PhD students and act as a mentor and tutor for them.

This research is focused on extracting yield surfaces from data rich full-field experimental information by solving an inverse problem. This research is focused on developing predictive models for how damage forms in carbon/carbon composites during manufacturing. This research will be primarily computational and provide opportunities to work closely with a team of researchers that are conducting experiments.  Students must be capable coders and a US citizen to be considered.

In this project, the main purpose is to develop a multi-scale textile modelling framework that allows accurate simulation of textile manufacturing processes such as yarn unwinding from a bobbin, weft insertion during weaving, stitching and tufting. This framework is implemented using finite element modelling as well as virtual fibre modelling. Key here are the dynamics of these systems as most textile production happens at high speeds.

Postdoc vacancy (3 years) on computational mechanics of thick adhesive joints in large wind turbine blades

Over the last years, UGent-MMS has developed the stand-alone BladeMesher software for generating finite element models of large wind turbine blades. The software reads in the material data and airfoil data of the wind turbine blade, and automatically constructs the geometry and finite element mesh for the blade. In a next step, the nodal and element information of the finite element mesh is written out to an input file for a commercial finite element solver (Abaqus in this case).

Magneto-Mechanical System to Reproduce and Quantify Complex Strain Patterns in Biological Materials

Based on magneto-active polymers, we provide a non-invasive and real-time control methodology to impose complex mechanical forces on biological systems. The device is conceptualised to be suitable for any traditional microscope! See scheme:

We allow for reproducing complex mechanical processes by simulating a set of local strain patterns occurring in real scenarios. We demonstrated this by simulating strain distribution occurring within the brain tissue during a head impact (Knutsen et al., 2020 #BMphi).
