# Finite Element modeling

PhD positions in the area of materials modelling and characterization: Western University, Canada

Submitted by Hamid.Abdolvand on

PhD positions are available:

I am looking for talented, self-motivated, and enthusiastic students with MSc degree in mechanical or materials engineering. Students with a background in any of the following areas are recommended to apply:

  • Solid mechanics and finite element modelling of materials
  • Crystal plasticity modelling of polycrystals
  • Materials characterization

The selected candidates are expected to start no later than January 2018.

A simplified model for railway catenary wire dynamics

Submitted by Flavio Stochino on

In this paper, a simplified analytic model for the dynamic behaviour of railway catenary wire is presented. The model is discussed and validated with the help of numerical results obtained by a finite element code, for the case of a typical Italian railway installation. The simplified model is convenient from the computational point of view and is useful for sensitivity analysis. Some parametric studies have been developed by considering as free parameters the velocity and the distance of the train pantographs and looking at their effect on catenary dynamics.

How to use non-dimensional form in open source codes instead of Units

I am using an open source FEM platform, which requires you to convert your equation system to non-dimensional form. So, there are no units specified for the parameters in the problem. If you use compatible input units, you should expect the output in matching unit - just like one would do in a normal python or C++ code for solving physical problems. I have an elasto-plastic dynamic problem to solve, and these are the parameters for the Drucker-Prager Soil Model for soft clay.

E = 5000000;                 // Young's Modulus in N/m^2 or Pa
