Coupling of a magnetic field with instability

Submitted by Joshua on

A bistable curved beam with magnetic torque-driven actuation has the potential for fast and untethered reconfiguration of metamaterials. However, no modeling method of a bistable curved beam whose instability is coupled with an external magnetic field for the design of active metamaterials. A bistable curved beam's second mode (S-shape) generation is essential for a multimodal and multistep reconfiguration of metamaterials, which was not explored before.

Multiple Positions on Robotic Metamaterials and Flexible Electronics at Duke University

Submitted by Xiaoyue Ni on

My lab is looking for strongly motivated Ph.D. students and Postdocs to join our group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science at Duke University. We conduct research on human-centered materials intelligence through a combination of flexible electronics, robotic metamaterials, and artificial intelligence. Two positions are available immediately.

Position 1: The project will focus on the design, fabrication, and testing of robotic mechanical metamaterials.

Isogeometric Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis in the nonlinear regime

Submitted by Deepak Pokkalla on

In the works below, an isogeometric analysis combined with adjoint sensitivity analysis is used for the design of mechancial metamaterials. A detailed introduction to isogeometric analysis (IGA), formulation and implementation of adjoint sensitivity analysis in the nonlinear regime for auxetics design is included in the thesis and papers below. The work presents a holistic physics-based approach for structural shape optimization using IGA. Kindly cite the work if you find useful.
