Research Assistant Position Openings for Ph.D. students of Advanced Manufacturing at Kansas State University

General: Kansas State University locates in Manhattan, KS, which ranks as the best college town in the US. Research in the Zhang Research Group in the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering is in the field of Advanced Manufacturing. Equal part fundamental theory and implementation, the current focus is on utilization of cellulosic biomaterials for renewable energy, additive manufacturing/ 3D printing of advanced materials for health, and ultrasonic vibration assisted processing. PhD vacancy (4 years) on the ultrasonic polar scan method for non-destructive testing of composites @ Ghent University (Belgium)

Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to techniques that are used in the life-cycle of a structural component to investigate their quality, functionality and 'health' without destroying the object, nor affecting its properties. The continuous development of more advanced materials, like fiber reinforced plastics, requires new and more sophisticated NDT techniques. One such an innovative NDT technique is the Ultrasonic Polar Scan (UPS) which has recently been developed, both experimentally and numerically, in our research group.

Case Study: Modelling Ultrasonic Array Response of Real Cracks

Stress corrosion cracks can be a serious problem in many engineering industries, and especially so for critical parts. While an ultrasonic transducer can be used for the non-destructive evaluation of cracks with simple shapes, complex branching cracks, such as stress corrosion cracks, require ultrasonic arrays that consist of multiple transducers and are able to inspect at multiple angles.

Post-doctoral Position in the Ohio State University

Post-doctoral position is available in the area of ultrasonic material characterization and nondestructive evaluation (strong background and experience in ultrasonic experiment and modeling are required). The position is supported from research grants. The focus area is ultrasonic study of nonhomogenous materials like polycrystalline materials, composites and adhesive bonds. State of the art ultrasonic laboratories and other characterization facilities are available. More details will be provided to interested individuals.
