A Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanics of Bioelectronics & Biomachines

Submitted by Zhengwei Li on

A fully funded PhD position is now available in Dr. Zhengwei Li’s research group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston (UH), with a start date in Spring 2026 or Fall 2026. The position will focus on the mechanics of soft biointegrated and biohybrid systems, including wireless bioelectronics, soft implantable devices, and bioengineered living systems. The research aims to uncover fundamental mechanical principles of soft and living systems and apply them to the design and development of next-generation biomedical technologies.

We welcome applicants from diverse engineering and science backgrounds. Priority will be given to candidates with a thesis-based Master’s degree (or equivalent) and research experience in one or more of the following areas: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, biomechanics, fluid–structure interaction, or experimental mechanics. Experience with finite-element analysis (FEA), soft-material characterization, or multiphysics simulations is highly desirable. Evidence of research productivity through publications or prior project experience will be considered a strong advantage.

Why Houston and UH? Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States, offers a vibrant research environment and outstanding quality of life. It is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, and serves as a global hub for healthcare, energy, and technology. The University of Houston is a Tier One research university located just minutes from downtown, with a rapidly growing engineering program (see UH 50-in-5). The city offers a diverse cultural scene, world-class amenities, excellent schools, and affordable living.

How to apply. Interested applicants are encouraged to email Dr. Zhengwei Li at zli65 [at] central.uh.edu (zli65[at]central[dot]uh[dot]edu). Please include an updated CV, contact information for three references, and manuscripts or publications (if available). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. More information about the position and the Li Research Group can be found at: https://ligroup.bme.uh.edu/
