Capillary effect can be trivial in gecko adhesion
The present study is motivated by two classes of seemingly contradicting experiments on the effect of humidity or the capillary effect on adhesion. While one class of experiments suggests strong effect of humidity in gecko adhesion, those on micromachined surfaces indicate that the adhesion energy remains constant up to a relative humidity of 60–70% even for hydrophilic surfaces. To resolve this apparent paradox, we perform numerical simulations of the vertical peeling of a spatula pad adhered to a rough surface with periodic attachment sites.

On optimal hierarchy of load-bearing biological materials
Load-bearing biological materials such as shell, mineralized tendon and bone exhibit 2-7 levels of structural hierarchy based on constituent materials (biominerals and proteins) of relatively poor mechanical properties. Mechanical properties of unidirectional nanocomposites with non-uniformly/randomly staggered platelet distribution
Unidirectional nanocomposite structures with parallel staggered platelet reinforcements are widely observed in natural biological materials. Our recent paper, published in J. Mech. Phys. Solids, is aimed at an investigation of the stiffness, strength, failure strain and energy storage capacity of a unidirectional nanocomposite with non-uniformly or randomly staggered platelet distribution.
SVD of Stretches
Hello !
I have been reading quite a bit about decomposing deformation gradients into F=RU = vR where R = rigid rot'n, U = right stretch & v = left stretch. Since the principle stretch axes & basis vectors don't usually coincide, such stretches produce both stretch & shear as shown in animation at link below.
A singular value decomposition of U (or v) can be used to isolate the pure stretches. In my case, U is postive semi-definite so SVD given by eigenvalue decompostion as follows:

Hi all,
Currently, I am using ANSYS 12.1 for the fatigue crack propagation simulation for the edge crack & center crack plates. It is a mixed mode crack propagation.
Can anybody please tell me or guide me how to write the code in the ANSYS using APDL for automatic remeshing around the cracktip when crack propagates to the new position?
