Like others, I'm very sorry to learn of Jerry Marsden's passing. He kindly helped all who asked (including me) despite a very busy life and recent illness. It seems fitting to mention this before citing him below.
According to Marsden/Hughes (Mathematical Foundations of Elasticity), stretch & shear (from homogeneous elastic deformation) are determined soley by U in the polar decomposition of the deformation gradient F=RU where R = rot'n & U = right stretch.
Hi,

Any ideas on how to mesh a complex volume in ANSYS? I have a 3D model, which is composed of various "added" volumes (meanning, I have only one unit complex volume). Please let me know your opinion in this regard. Thanks.
It is with the deepest sadness that I inform you that Professor Jerrold E. Marsden passed away on September 21.

hi friends am doin my my project on" FEA of plasticity induced crack closure". my specimen size is 80*80 mm. by using symmetry condition i modelled 1/4th of model in ANSYS. therfore i created 40*40 mm plate. with initial crack length of 4mm.means its MT specimen of 80*80mm with 8 mm crack length, by symmetry condition i modelled 40*40 with 4mm crack lenth.
We have an immediate opening for an outstanding post-doctoral fellow in our Multiscale Mechanics& Physics (MMP) Laboratory. We are broadlyinterested in the fundamental physics and mechanics of nano/bio materials andtheir applications in innovative nano/bio devices. The focus of our current projects include: (i) nanoscale transport phenomena in pharmaceutical, biomedical and biologicalsystems, (ii) mechanics of nanodefects and their applications in engineering nanodevices,(iii) multifunctional and advanced materials for structural applications.
Joint Postdoctoral Fellow Position at KAUST
and Georgia Institute of Technology — Accepting applications until the
position is filled
We have one more opening and have no U.S. visa waiver requirement anymore.
