Professor Kurkarni (University of Houston) has published a very nice perspective paper "Thermal Fluctuations as a Computational Microscope for Studying Crystalline Interfaces: A Mechanistic Perspective," in the December, 2017 issue of Journal of Applied Mechanics (JAM). The paper is attached.
The perspective papers in JAM are invited short papers on an emerging field in mechanics, or some important new developments in an existing field in mechanics.

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the mechanics of failure of adhesive joints. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
Photo-chromic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) is a type of smart materials which are sensitive to light. Here we harness its photo-mechanical response to flexibly control surface patterning, through modeling a film involving homeotropic nematic liquid crystals with director perpendicular to the polymer film attached on a compliant substrate. Theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted to explore the surface instability of such film/substrate systems under both uniform and non-uniform illuminations by ultraviolet (UV) light, respectively.

We are organizing a mini-symposium on Multiphysics Modeling of Cells and Tissues at the World Congress in Computational Mechanics (WCCM 2018).
Last year we published a paper titled “Electromechanical Catastrophe”. I am planning to give a lecture on this topic in my course on Advanced Elasticity. The mathematics of catastrophe is old, but can be used more widely.
