There are emerging demonstrations that micro- or nano-craters engineered on polymer surfaces can enable enhanced adhesion. In the past, we have developed a framework for quantifying the suction forces produced by isolated macroscopic craters neglecting surface effects. In this paper, we take surface tension into consideration because it plays a significant role in miniature craters on soft polymers. We have derived linear and nonlinear elastic solutions for the elasto-capillary distortion in miniature hemispherical craters whentheyare demoldedfromthe template.

Materials such as metals, metal alloys, ceramics, glass, sands, soils, and others develop very fine regions of concentrated strain or stress when subject to certain loading conditions. These regions are manifested at the micro scale and may lead to the eventual fracture and failure of systems and structures. The ability to model these phenomena is of critical significance in engineering applications.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Middle East Technical University (Northern Cyprus Campus) invites applications for faculty positions to begin in 2018. The kinematic theory of Weingarten-Volterra line defects is revisited, both at small and finite deformations. Existing results are clarified and corrected as needed, and new results are obtained. The primary focus is to understand the relationship between the disclination strength and Burgers vector of deformations containing a Weingarten-Volterra defect corresponding to different cut-surfaces.

Volume conservation during plastic deformation is the most important feature and should be realized in elastoplastic theories. However, it is found in this paper that an elastoplastic theory is not volume conserved if it improperly sets an arbitrary plastic strain rate tensor to be deviatoric. We discuss how to rigorously realize volume conservation in finite strain regime, especially when the unloading stress free configuration is not adopted in the elastoplastic theories.
