The objectives of this project are to develop methods to probabilistically predict the life of aero-structures subjected to combined extreme environmentsand also to quantify confidence in the predicted margins of safety on the life.
Applications are invited for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant or associate professor level. The MMAE Department at IIT is seeking candidates with interdisciplinary research interests contributing to one or more of the department’s areas of strategic research emphasis, which include (1) mechanical design, (2) digital manufacturing, (3) computational materials science and engineering, or other research areas that enable strong collaborations.
I am seeking Ph.D. students to work on developing and using multiscale methods for modeling nanocomposites and nanomaterials. Candidates should have a BS or MS degree in mechanical engineering, material science, civil engineering or other related areas. Candidates with computational solid mechanics experience at the continuum or molecular level are highly preferred.

Due to funding restrictions, funding is only available for well-qualified UK or EU students. Other motivated students are encouraged to apply but will need to secure their own funding. Candidates should hold a 1st or 2.1 degree in any science or engineering discipline which had a significant materials/engineering simulation content.

A PhD in applied mechanics or a related discipline is highly desirable for this position. Applicant must have excellent knowledge of finite element methods and good programming skills (Fortran or C/C++).
