Commercial Tools on Digital Photoelasticity Developed in an Academic Environment

I would like to draw your attention as well as share an excellent standing-out example of an outcome of decades of focused academic research as commercial software which finds usage in several industries such as biomedical, electrical, aerospace, civil, mechanical, manufacturing, biological, and agriculture.

Elastic straining of free-standing monolayer graphene

The extraordinary mechanical properties of graphene were measured on very small or supported samples. In our new paper published in Nature Communications, by developing a protocol for sample transfer, shaping and straining, we report the outstanding elastic properties and stretchability of free-standing single-crystalline monolayer graphene under in situ tensile tests.

Flexoelectricity as a universal mechanism for energy harvesting from crumpling of thin sheets

Can the mere crumpling of a paper produce electricity? An inhomogeneous strain can induce electrical response in all dielectrics and not just piezoelectric materials. This phenomenon of flexoelectricity is rather modest unless unusually large strain gradients are present. In this paper, we analyze the crumpling of thin elastic sheets and establish scaling laws for their electromechanical behavior to prove that an extremely strong flexoelectric response is achieved at submicron length scales.

Fully Funded PhD Position on Mechanical Metamaterials at the University of Missouri, Columbia

The position: I am looking to support a PhD student to work with me towards the design, modeling, fabrication and testing of mechanical metamaterials with emphasis on morphing structures such as origami tessellations and lattice materials. The study will focus on deriving and validating novel stress-strain relationships that transcend the standard framework of Hook's law. Sought applications will be in the domains of (i) self-deploying space structures; (ii) soft robotics; and (iii) "invisibility" cloaks.

PhD positions on mechanics of morphing solids and shells at the University of Missouri, Columbia

The positions: I am looking to support two PhD students to work with me towards a mechanical understanding of morphing structures such as origami tessellations and lattice materials and metamaterials. By "understanding" I mean anything relevant to the theoretical and numerical modeling of these structures, in static and dynamic regimes, within the context of elasticity whether linearized or not as well as the fabrication and testing of toy models necessary to assess that "understanding".

We inform you that the next indentation conference from the Groupe Indentation Multi-Echelle (GIME) will be held in Liège (Belgium) on 11-14 September 2018.  The conference gathers every two years, scientists and industrials concerned by the problems of mechanical characterization of surfaces. In 2018, this conference is organized by Belgian scientists: ULg, CRM Group, UCL et UMons. In line with the 2016 edition, we organize two half-days of training on indentation, preceding the 2-day symposium.
