Mode II strain energy release rate

Hello guys,

I have a silly question. We all know that mode II strain energy release rate was given as GII=KII^2/E for linear elastic material. My question is why E (Young's modulus) but not G (shear modulus) appears in the equation, because Mode II crack propagation is attributed to the shear stress. On the other hand, it seems self-explanatory that we use E for mode I and G for Mode III.

I just wonder if there is a simple explanation to that.

Mechanics of Materials: Textbook Recommendation

Submitted by vicky.nguyen on

I will be teaching a sophomore level class  mechanics of materials class.  The class will cover mechanics of basic strength of materials (e.g. beams, pressure vessels), but I also want to teach basic elements of failure mechanics (fracture, fatigue, plasticity, and wear.)  I'm looking for a recommendation of an undergrad mechanics textbook that covers the fracture, fatigue, plasticity, and wear.  The students will have had a statics and mechanics class and their textbook already covers strength of materials.  Thanks.

Problems with cohesive zone. Does it make sence to use them here?

Hey I've got a beam and between two different materials i'm thinking to
put a cohesive zone with "weaker" material properties. Does it make
sense to use cohesive zone models?

My model is looking like this now. But I don't know what's wrong. It
seems taht the whole force/displacement is lost in the cohesive zone.

If somebody can help that would be very nice

Hi all,

I exercised "Prob37: FSI analysis of a simplified turbine using a sliding mesh" ADINA tutorial. I got an error message and the program stopped solving.

The error message:

ERROR CODE ADF2075

"-R option cannot be used for adaptive-mesh or sliding mesh. You can use -m, -M options."

What are the -R,-m, -M options? How can i solve this problem?

I am a final year Master of Engineering student at Materials Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Science. I have done my Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engg. from Bengal Engineering and Science University, West Bengal, India. Currently I am working on my ME project "Simulation and Validation of Roll-Separating force and Limiting Reduction in Cold Rolling", under Prof Vikram Jayaram, Materials Engg Dept. and Prof S.K.Biswas, Mechanical Engg. Dept, IISc., Bangalore. After completion (June, 2011) of my ME, I want to do Phd.

Im looking for a PhD Position in the area of molecular simulations

Modeling Fracture and Failure with Abaqus lecture notes

Submitted by badrinath on

Hi All,

I am working on modelling the fracture failures using ABAQUS. I am searching for support where I can start on my own by following some notes.

If anyone has the notes related to this course conducted by Simulia please help me in getting that for me.
