How to get started with UMAT?

Submitted by deepakshyam on

Hi,

I am new to ABAQUS. I started using it a month ago and I need to model a "thermoelectric material". I found out that this could only done using the subroutine UMAT. I do not know how to approach it. It would be great if someone can guide me on how get started with UMAT.

Thanks,

axial residual stress distribution in pipe

Submitted by amir r on

Hi every body

I study the residual stress derived from a circumferential weld on the end of a pipe and degree of freedom in the other end have been taken

but i have a problem in residual stress distribution along axis of pipe.

its known that the axial stress at the end of constrainted end should be zero or little but mine is in order of 100 MPa while residual stress is 300 MPa.

can anybody give me a hint about whats the source of error

thanks

How can predefined fields be mapped from old mesh to new mesh using *map solution in ABAQUS?

Dear friends,

I used *map solution a lot and it works fine in my modelling. Recently, I
came across a problem with "predefined fields". The ABAQUS's
documentation explicitly states "temperature and field variables are
mapped from the old mesh to the new mesh". According to my experience,
temperature is fine and it can be correctly mapped. Unfortunately, the
predefined fields can not be mapped.

I am not sure this is a bug of ABAQUS (slight likeliness) or something

Question about how to determine support radius..

Hi, everyone.

I'm going to employ the meshfree method to analyze composite model.

But, I can't understand how to determine the support radius although I have read some references.

I will use the circular support domain.

Please explain how to determine the support radius.

Arc length factors in Riks method

Hello,

It would be grateful if someone could explain me how to calibrate arc length increment factors in Static, Riks method in Abaqus.

For a default input in Static, Riks step I get max LPF factor equal 147(this value is probably correct, expected 147.8). Unfortunately, I'm not satisfied in number of increments(the result of 12 increments). The question is: how to calibrate arc length increment factors(initial, minimum, maxium arc length increment and estimated total arc length) to get more accurate results.

I found something about it, quote:

Abaqus multiscale bridge with UMAT

Hello,

I'm trying create a bridge between scales using Abaqus, UMAT subroutine.

On macro scale I call UMAT, which calls other abaqus inp. with this example code

call SYSTEM('abaqus cae script=C:\Temp\mixUMAT\simpleModel.py -- A 2 5.3')

And my "simpleModel" receives all arguments properly.

However, I need some values which are calculcated on "simpleModel", to UMAT continues the executation.

Anyone knows  how can I do it?

Thank you!

Applying Initial Conditions

Submitted by mecheng1234 on
I am using ABAQUS 6.9 and would like to apply a residual stress region on 2D Plate in a specific section.

I am trying to enter a compressive stress = -200E06 to a set called set-1. I read online that to apply a stress to a set the following must be entered:

*INITIAL CONDITIONS, type=stress
set_set-1, s11=-200E06,s22=-200E6

The code above must be entered before the steps in the edit keyword window under model, then a create a blank step after.

How to solve Euler-Bernoulli beam for point load?

I am student and learning beam theory. I am trying to solve Euler-Bernoulli 4th order differential equation to find the deflection of a beam.  The equation is

EI v''''(x) = w

where v is the transverse deflection and w is the distributed uniform load on the beam.

But how would you solve the above if the beam is fixed on both ends, and instead of w, I have a point load P at say distance 'a' from the left end?  For a beam fixed on both ends, I use the following boundary conditions

ABAQUS - XFEM

i am using XFEM in a 2D analysis (plate under uniaxial tension) and would like to get the SIFs at different crack lengths to compare with published data for verification before i start performing crack propogation analyses.

My problem is, history outputs are not available for crack growth in XFEM only static cracks (at least from what i read).

Ideally, i would love to get the SIFs as they change through the crack propagation.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Consistent mass matrix

Submitted by kajalschopra on

Hi,

I have a simple academic question and shall be grateful if helped.

See the attached word document.I have been reading the derivation of the consistent mass matrix. My question is:

1)While formng the equation 10.51 (referring figure 10.7), the author considers the equilibrium of the differential element of length dx.

But the forces on  each end if the differential element can be different only if there is some load between the two ends.
