Hi,
I am new to ABAQUS. I started using it a month ago and I need to model a "thermoelectric material". I found out that this could only done using the subroutine UMAT. I do not know how to approach it. It would be great if someone can guide me on how get started with UMAT.

You should begin by writing a UMAT for an elastic material with $\sigma=E\epsilon$ relation. That will help you understand the workings of UMAT.
The UMAT page in ABAQUS has an example which is not too complicated. I think the example problem is for viscoelastic material.
