A fully funded PhD position in "Damage Mitigation in Lightweight Marine Composites" is available at the University of Genoa (Italy), within the activities of the newly formed National Center on Sustainable Mobility (Spoke 3: Waterways, Work Package WP1: Energy Efficiency).
The research project will investigate the response of marine sandwich composite structural systems, to design concepts able to mitigate damage and to improve resistance, resilience and energy efficiency of mobility systems in waterways.

Abstract: A simple nonlocal field theory of peridynamic type is applied to model brittle fracture. The kinetic relation for the crack tip velocity given by Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) is recovered directly from the nonlocal dynamics, this is seen both theoretically and in simulations. An explicit formula for the change of internal energy inside a neighborhood enclosing the crack tip is found for the nonlocal model and applied to LEFM.
1 Ph.D. position is open for a research project related to bioinspired mechanics of cutting and piercing of soft homogeneous and heterogeneous (composite) materials. The position is under the supervision of Prof. Mattia Bacca in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UBC, Vancouver – Canada. It is funded by the Human Frontiers in Science Program, in collaboration with the Bioengineering Department at Imperial College London and the Department of Ecology at the University of California.
