Roll up your sleeves

Submitted by Fan Xu on

When you push up your sleeves, wrinkles form, which eventually evolve into ridges (pictured). As familiar as you may be with this phenomenon, have you ever thought about its underlying mechanism? It involves the complex nonlinear mechanical behaviour of large deformations and surface instabilities, which in turn give rise to a sophisticated morphological evolution. And now, Yifan Yang and co-workers have revealed a hitherto unknown post-buckling behaviour that involves multiple bifurcation transitions (Phys. Rev.

A question regarding applying the boundary conditions in thin film peeling

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica

Hello all,

As is my understanding that, in analytical models such as "Kendall Peeling Model", when they talk about peeling angle it is the angle at which the peeling force is applied (or am I wrong?). But when it comes to FE analysis, if we displace one end of the film at an angle by applying displacement boundary conditions on that end, the resulting forces are not along the same direction of the displacements. So, I am confused as to how to compare the FE results with that of the analytical models.

Thank you.

Postdoctoral vacancy (3 years) on high-frequency vibration techniques for non-destructive inspection of 3D printed metal parts

Submitted by wvpaepeg on

The use of 3D printed metal structures is taking a very fast ramp-up in industry. General Electric has demonstrated the possibility of printing titanium fuel injectors for their LEAP engine, EADS has printed a nacelle hinge bracket for the Airbus A320, Boeing is printing plastic inlet ducts for high-altitude aircrafts, hip implants and other prosthetics are exploiting the design freedom of additive manufacturing (AM),...

PhD vacancy (4 years) on fatigue testing of composites with advanced instrumentation

Submitted by wvpaepeg on

Composites are used more and more as structural components in aerospace industry, automotive sector, wind energy applications,… As a consequence, the loads on those composite components are much higher than for secondary components, and can lead to fatigue damage in the composite part. Moreover, the fatigue behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites is much more complex than that of metals, because of the many different fibre/polymer combinations, the heterogeneous nature of the composite, the anisotropic behaviour of the composite and the multitude of damage mechanisms.
