Architected Lattices for Simultaneous Broadband Attenuation of Airborne Sound and Mechanical Vibrations in All Directions

Submitted by Osama R. Bilal on

Since their inception, more than two decades ago, phononic crystals and metamaterials have led to advanced materials with exceptional acoustic and elastic characteristics, such as negative effective mass and stiffness. In these materials, the dispersion properties and the energy transfer are controlled by selecting the geometry of the lattices and their constitutive material properties. Most designs, however, only affect one mode of energy propagation, transmitted either as acoustic airborne sound or as elastic structural vibrations.

PhD positions in mechanics of metamaterials at the University of Minnesota

Submitted by stefanogonella on

PhD positions are available at the University of Minnesota in the group of Prof. Stefano Gonella. The positions are in the general area of mechanics and physics of solids, with emphasis on mechanical metamaterials. The position ideally starts in fall 2019, although a later start date (for example, in January 2020) can be considered.

Topics of current interest are:

1) Topological metamaterials;

2) Nonlinear and soft metamaterials;

3) Tunable and programmable metastructures.

Fully Funded PhD Position on Mechanical Metamaterials at the University of Missouri, Columbia

Submitted by nassarh on

The position: I am looking to support a PhD student to work with me towards the design, modeling, fabrication and testing of mechanical metamaterials with emphasis on morphing structures such as origami tessellations and lattice materials. The study will focus on deriving and validating novel stress-strain relationships that transcend the standard framework of Hook's law. Sought applications will be in the domains of (i) self-deploying space structures; (ii) soft robotics; and (iii) "invisibility" cloaks.

Here are some clarifications:

(1) Applicants do not need to have English Language Proficiency test results at the time of applying. However, they need to have this before they could start a PhD.

(2) Salary range is approx £31k to £35k per annum, which is over double that of a normal PhD studentship in the UK.

(3) Deadline 01 October, 2018.

Can you "chop" a mechanical wave?

Submitted by Ahmed Elbanna on

In this paper we highlight several interesting phenomena that may emerge from coupling simple elastic systems like 1d bars. While in compostes we usually focus on wave propagation normal to the stratification direction (composite layers are coupled in series), here we show that extreme attenuation at multiple frequencies may emerge in linear systems that are coupled transversaly. We also introduce a simple device that act as a chopper for mechanical signals.
