Stress intensity factor

Submitted by Surendran M on

Hi I have long been looking for a clear way of defining stress intensity factors. Apart from the usual bookinsh definitions such as "strength of singularity" "state of stress". Of course I could convince myself by relating SIF with Strain Energy Release Rate (G) as 'G' has a more convincing physical meaning explained through the creating of new surfaces. This kind of gives the feeling that 'K' is a derived quantity in the field of fracture mechanics.

So is there a better way of explaining SIF without having to go through 'G'.

Thanks and Regards

I am new to abaqus and currently working in Abaqus 2016

I am getting the error 5 unconnected regions in abaqus. I have checked thoroughly all the interefaces and boundary conditions but I am not able to sort out this problem. Also I am getting Displacment increment is too big for contact. The job is getting aborted eventually.

I have attached images of the model.

Namaste from India.Jay Naik here. I am Post graduation Student doing Specialization in Machine Design.I am Doing My project in Master in area of" Design of storage tank" in One of the reputed company in Static Equipment Design.Any Idea on which Software(Fea or failure analysis) Design of storage tank is carried out?I have heard about AMETank and Ansys.

Secondly i am carrying out Literature review Present days.reading API 650 and other standards.Suggestion requires in this area.

Please guide me in proper manner.in which way i should carry out the project in systematic way.

Implicit vs explicit result in damage-mechanics+plasticity model

Hello experts, I am trying to model the response (damage+plasticity) and compare with commercial FE codes. I chose to follow explicit scheme and compare with available implicit solution. Attached image shows the comparison between implicit (commerical FE software) and explicit (my Python program).

As it can be observed, near the failure, i.e. applied strain > 0.05, there is a noise in the explicit solution. When I decrease the time step, the noise infact decreases.

(a) Is this noise is a result of explicit procedure ? or some thing wrong with my algorithm ?
