Hilbert Complexes of Nonlinear Elasticity

Submitted by arash_yavari on

We introduce some Hilbert complexes involving second-order tensors on flat compact manifolds with boundary that describe the kinematics and the kinetics of motion in nonlinear elasticity. We then use the general framework of Hilbert complexes to write Hodge-type and Helmholtz-type orthogonal decompositions for second-order tensors.

Gérard Maugin (December 2, 1944 - September 22, 2016)

Submitted by arash_yavari on

Dear Friends:

As was also mentioned by another colleague (http://imechanica.org/node/20391), Prof. Gérard Maugin passed away on September 22, 2016.

The following is a message that my good friend Prof. Marcelo Epstein sent me and a few other colleagues. He has kindly given me permission to share it with you.

Dear friends,

Failure Envelope

Submitted by mohammedlamine on

A finite element software computes the stresses and/or strains sets values at each dynamic iteration step. These values can be plotted on a stress-space giving several failure envelopes. For an isotropic or an homogeneous mixture the Von Mises criterion represents an ideal envelope which may not coincide with the available envelopes but the stresses values can be checked with the material strength.

Recycled Concrete Slabs: excellent punching performance!

Submitted by Flavio Stochino on

This paper reports on the experimental assessment of the punching shear behaviour of reinforced recycled concrete slabs characterized by fine natural aggregates and coarse recycled aggregates. In particular, the latter were obtained only from demolished concrete. The experimental campaign has been carried out on 12 specimens. Moreover, three reinforced natural aggregate concrete slabs have been casted and tested as benchmarks. Four replacement percentages (30, 50, 80 and 100%) of coarse recycled aggregates in place of coarse natural aggregates have been considered.

The Mechanical Laboratory of Sousse Scientific Workshop

Submitted by vanos1989 on

The Mechanical Laboratory of Sousse (LMS) of the National School of Engineers of Sousse intends to organize annual scientific workshop on one of the four research themes identified by the laboratory teams. This first Workshop is proposed by the LMS team: “Fatigue of Materials and Structures”. The proposed theme is ” Mechanical performance of materials: From experiments to predictive approaches”.

A perspective paper on material failure theory and applications

Submitted by Yonggang Huang on

The Perspective papers published in Journal of Applied Mechanics have attracted a lot of readers, such as the first perspective paper by Huajian Gao (Brown University) which has been downloaded for >8,000 times.  A perspective paper, as invited by the editor of JAM, is very short (2~3 pages) and easy to read (like Readers' Digest) to reveal some emerging directions, or some important discoveries in clasical directions, in mechanics.
