Grad Student Openings: University of California Merced - Mechanical Engineering

Submitted by amartini on

There are PhD and MS openings at the University of California Merced in the Mechanical Engineering Department. UC Merced is the newest campus of the well-known University of California system. Because the campus is still relatively small, most incoming graduate students are funded via Teaching Assistantship or Graduate Research Assistantship. Also, the application fee will be refunded for students who are admitted and join the program in the Fall. The application deadline is January 2018.

PhD position in computational mechanics

Submitted by Arttu Polojärvi on

We are looking for a doctoral student to work on numerical modelling of fragmentation of quasi-brittle materials. In more detail, you will study breakage and fragmentation of ice blocks. These phenomena occur under compressive loads in ice block to ice block contacts. The fragmentation process is complicated, and requires novel numerical modelling techniques. Modelling may need to be done on different scales, which may have to reach from very high resolution modeling to simplified contact models on larger scale.

ABAQUS - the influence of changing kinematic and cycling hardening parameters

Submitted by szyfuj on

Hello,

I have recently done a simple hourglass model to check the influence of hardening parameters in Abaqus. The reason was the effects of the parameters' change in bigger models were a bit surprising, therefore I needed to investigate the reason using some simpler model. Please see file 1.

After performing tension/compression cycles I got results as shown in files 2, 3, 4 and 5. Please note that only the hardening parameter in the description changes, the other three stays the same for each series.

Postdoc/PHD RA position available in the University of North Texas

Ashby PhD Scholarship in the Mechanics of Materials

Submitted by Hilde F on

A fully funded PhD scholarship exists in the area of Mechanics of Materials, endowed in honour of Prof M F Ashby. The successful applicant will have a 1st class degree (and ideally a Masters degree) in an appropriate field. The precise topic of the PhD can be fixed after the scholarship has been awarded.

Further details may be obtained from Ms Hambro-Fernandez (Div-C [at] eng.cam.ac.uk (Div-C[at]eng[dot]cam[dot]ac[dot]uk))
