Rupture of a highly stretchable acrylic dielectric elastomer (VHB)

Submitted by Matt Pharr on

Dielectric elastomer transducers are often subject to large tensile stretches and are susceptible to rupture. Here we carry out an experimental study of the rupture behavior of membranes of an acrylic dielectric elastomer (VHB 4905). Pure-shear test specimens are used to measure force-displacement curves, using samples with and without pre-cracks. We find that introducing a pre-crack into a membrane drastically reduces the stretch at rupture. Furthermore, we measure the stretch at rupture and fracture energy using samples of different heights at various stretch-rates. The stretch at rupture is found to decrease with sample height, and the fracture energy is found to increase with stretch-rate.

Modelling crack propagation using XFEM in Abaqus (Fracture Mechanics)

Submitted by waqas.hf on

HI,

I am using XFEM to model crack propagation in thin aluminum panles using ABAQUS. The reason for modelling it is to check my numerical model against the results published by Lyonel Reinhardt, t, J.A. Cordes in the paper XFEM Modeling of Mixed-Mode Cracks in Thin Aluminum Panels  (http://www.3ds.com/fileadmin/PRODUCTS/SIMULIA/PDF/scc-papers/Def-XFEM-Modeling-Mixed-Mode-Cracks-Thin-Aluminum-Panels.pdf)

Meshing with UEL/UMAT element

Submitted by somusshabadi on

Hello All,

Does anyone have any idea how to automate meshing  using USER DEFINED ELEMENTS (for Example UEL) in Abaqus using python. Actually I need to mesh an arbitrary shaped structure  with 9-Node Quadrilateral Element. Abaqus doesn't support meshing of  9 Node Quad Element (S9R) either.

Abaqus problem

Submitted by nidz on

Hi,

I am using a bridge model with Tet element as mesh in the structure. I have given many static loads in deck surface . After submitting 'Job' gets stresses of different element label of the deck as report. I want to now calculate the volume of single element (tet element) so that I become successful in calculting the damaged volume due to the load. Is there any option to get the volume of the meshed elements.

Thanks in anticipation.

Saint-Venant's Principe of the " Cavity in Cylinder " Problem

Submitted by Jian-zhong Zhao on

The problem of a cylinder with a small spherical cavity loaded by an

equilibrium system of forces is suggested and discussed and its formulation of Saint-Venant's Principle is established. It is evident that finding

solutions of boundary-value problems is a precise and pertinent approach

to establish Saint-Venant type decay of elastic problems.
