Non linear (geometric non linearity) problem- Programming shallow truss element-Reference book by Crisfield

Submitted by bruno-page on

I’m trying to program geometric non linear analysis (finite element)-for a shallow truss element.I am using the book by Crisfield for the purpose. Basically, I am using the incremental approach for analysis. And I am struck with a problem. The problem is that my Structural stiffness matrix (after application of Boundary conditions) is singular i.e. it’s determinant value is “0”.

Can somebody suggest a general-purpose object oriented design of the finite element?

I am looking into object oriented programing of the finite element method. I don't know whether somebody can provide a general-purpose oop design of a general finite element program, say a linear static analysis of a 3D solid. Or somebody who are experienced in this field point out some good references for this purpose. It will be better if the oop design is language free, i.e. not directly related with implementation in a specific language such as c++. Thanks in advance.

Post-doctoral fellow position in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics @ Northwestern

Submitted by jandrade on

We are currently seeking candidates for a Post-doctoral Fellow position in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Northwestern University. The successful candidate is expected to possess a Ph.D. in engineering or science and must have experience in the area of computational mechanics, broadly involving computational inelasticity, finite elements and continuum mechanics. Knowledge of discrete mechanics is desirable but not essential.

My Ph.D. Defence

I am pleased to inform you that I will be defending my Ph.D. thesis, formally in mechanical engineering, at COEP, University of Pune, India, on the next Sunday (i.e. 20th September, 2009).

The title of my thesis is: "A New Approach to Computer Modeling and Analysis of Certain Fundamental Field Problems from Engineering Sciences."

tenure-track assistant professsor at Northwestern University

Fourth order tensor

Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on

Hi all,

I have a fundamental question on Tensors. The length of a vector (firts order tensor) is independent of the reference co-ordinate system. In case of second order tensor (stress/strain), the invariants (I1, I2, I3) are independent of the co-ordinate system.

If I consider 4th order tensor (of course 3rd order also), say Cijkl, what parameters are constant? (Like length in vector and invariants in second order tensors).

Thanks in advance,

- Ramdas
