Characteristic impedance of a tube

Submitted by BMEstudent on

Hi all,

I need to calculate the characteristic (or specific) impedance of a tube. Generally this tube has a varing cross-sectional area (diameter changes and it has tube is not cylidrical). However for a very simplified case, let's assume it is a perfect cylender terminated at a finite length. The walls and termination are not rigid so it will have interaction with acoustic pressure inside.

Postdoc position on multi-scale modelling of composites vibration response @ Ghent University (Belgium)

Submitted by wvpaepeg on

Nowadays, there is an increasing interest to use composite materials in automotive applications, in particular the use of fibre-reinforced plastics (carbon or glass fibres in a polymer matrix) is widely considered. The use of lighter materials, and hence a reduced fuel consumption, can be one of the possible solutions for reduced CO2 emissions. As the automotive industry is mainly familiar with metals and plastics, a lot of research is being spent on the mechanical response of composites under fatigue and impact loading, and on developing new design methodologies for these "new" materials.

Post-Doc position with Del Duca – Academie des Sciences Foundation at LMA Marseille, France

Submitted by Cédric Bellis on

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the area of large-scale inversion and imaging using acoustic waves and high-performance computing.

At the interface between the fields of solid mechanics, acoustics and numerical modeling, the present job offer focuses on inverse problems with the aim of extending applications of the spectral-element method and petascale high-performance computing to (1) ocean acoustics and for (2) non-destructive material testing.

Generation of Sound (or Ultrasound) Waves & Resonance

Submitted by Babaei on

Hi,

I have a question and would be grateful if you could drop me some lines for it:

1- Is sound (or ultrasound) is ONLY generated when a structure is vibrating at its resonance frequency?

2- If the answer to the above question is YES, is sound (or ultrasound) generated at all resonance frequencies or just some of them depending on the amplitude of the vibration.

Thank you,

Babaei
