I share the vision of iMechanica, but am not ready to post anything, should I register?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

To post anything in iMechanica, you need to register for a free account and log in.

iMechanica is open: anyone can read any post without registering. Even if you do not post anything, by registering you make a statement: you encourage fellow mechanicians to explore communication online. A large, active user list will attract more and better posts. That is, by registering for a free account, you will have better posts to read, and you contribute to promoting mechanics.

I can’t find someone who I know is a member. How should I modify my search?

Submitted by Managers on

The search creates a content and a users list. To look for a person by name, make sure to look under the “users” tabs when you get the search results.

The search engine does not go through user’s profiles to find matches; it only goes through the usernames, which are usually the user’s names. Therefore, searching by the name of the school, company, occupation, etc, will yield no results. If you don’t know the person’s username, try searching for keywords related to their area of expertise.

How can I copy text written in Microsoft Word into my blog and make the post look nice?

Submitted by Managers on

If you write in Microsoft Word, you may not want to paste the text directly into the window of "Body". Microsoft Word puts in a large amount of formatting which is incompatible with every blog engine. The result is a bad looking post.

Who can edit my blog entry?

Submitted by Zhigang Suo on

You can, of course.  After you have submitted an entry, you can edit it as often as you want.  To do so, click the title of the entry, and then click the tab "edit".  After you edit your entry, click "submit" at the bottom of the page.

The architects and moderators of iMechanica can also edit your entry. You can view the changes by clicking the title of your post, and then the tab "revisions". If you disagree with the modification, click "revert".

What can I post in my blog?

Submitted by Zhigang Suo on

Anything. You can post anything you see fit, so long as you respect copyright. Be creative. What you post is a decision of yours.

For example, you can post advertisements of conferences and jobs. You can upload preprints of your papers, a practice permitted by most journals. You can even post a preprint of a paper already published in a journal, so that your paper gets one more chance to find its readers. You can post your lecture notes. You can express your admirations for another mechanician, or opinions concerning our field. You can also share tips with fellow mechanicians on how to make our working life easier and more enjoyable.

How can you update your profile?

  • click "my account" at the top left corner
  • click "edit"
  • click "My profile"

When people click your name or your photo anywhere on iMechanica, they will land on the page of you profile and resume. Some of the key data appear on the user list, a tab in the header of iMechanica.

While you may change your job and your email address, your iMechanica user number is an invariant in your life. As you grow professionally, you simply update your profile and resume.
