Why not use FDM in solid mechanics?

Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the related techniques such as FVM, are often found put to great use in fluid mechanics. See any simulation showing not only streamlines but also vortex shedding, turbulent mixing, etc.

Ludwig Prandtl, A great mechanician!

Ludwig Prandtl's contributions to fluid mechanics include his development of lifting line theory (to describe the lift and drag of wings of finite span), his work in turbulence, and his experimental and theoretical studies of gasdynamics. Prandtl was trained as a solid mechanist and continued to contribute to solid mechanics throughout most of his career. However, his discovery of the boundary layer is regarded as one of the most important breakthroughs in fluid mechanics of all time and has earned Prandtl the title of Father of Modern Fluid Mechanics.

Sony flexible OLED Display

Sony announces a OLED display on plastic film.




This is apparently the world's first full color OLED/organic TFT on a flexible substrate. Sony managed to create a flexible display with a size of 2.5 inch featuring a resolution of 120×RGB×160 pixel.
Other specifications of the flexible OLED display include 100 cd/m2
brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 0.3mm thickness of the panel.

Anecdotal evidence can often serve as a basis for an opinion on the state of science and engineering in the US and abroad. While that evidence is valuable, it is not necessarily representative of national treends. Fortunately, the US government has collected useful information relevant to education, research, and employment within the science and engineering communities and presented it in a series of annual reports.


FEMLAB and strain gradient theories

I am aware of several recent papers related to computational issues in strain gradient and other higher order theories. Has anyone tried the software package FEMLAB for such theories ? It purports to solve user defined PDEs. We have only had limited experience with it and I am curious to find out if someone has tried it out.
