The Senior Modeling Scientist is a key member of Novelis Global R&D organization, taking a leading and / or supporting role in the development and application of advanced modeling techniques for high-impact problems within Novelis. The suitable candidate will support and / or lead multi-disciplinary teams focused on accelerating the design and discovery of new materials and process technologies. The role largely involves developing a deeper understanding of “as supplied sheet properties – product performance” relationships through the development of advanced numerical methods, including finite element analysis, physics-based constitutive models of metal plasticity, and data-driven approaches to develop fast and high-throughput models. The successful candidate will work closely with metallurgists, product, process and pilot line engineers, as well as application engineers at the customer solution centers on a variety of technical challenges. By taking advantage of the substantial laboratory testing and characterization facilities as well as the pilot-scale equipment at the center, the Senior Modeling Scientist will gather critical experimental input for their models, validate her/his ideas under real-world conditions and drive projects to deployment at Novelis plants or customer operations. The role includes opportunities to travel for direct customer support and collaborations with both external partners and Novelis R&D centers and plants around the globe. The role provides significant potential for technical growth and a real chance to impact the future success of Novelis’ global businesses.
- Act as company-wide subject matter expert for the development and application of finite element methods and constitutive models in support of global R&D projects in the metal packaging, consumer electronics, automotive and specialty domains.
- Establish advanced FE models of sheet metal forming and components within Novelis to provide a capability enabling transformational product and technology development.
- Define and lead projects to develop and apply advanced FE models to address critical product and process development challenges.
- Partner with a wide range of internal specialists in metallurgy, rolling process and manufacturing, experimental characterization and testing, integrated computational materials engineering.
- Establish and lead supporting partnerships with universities and other external organizations.
- Support current and future research programs that require the development and application of data-driven and machine learning techniques.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop associated experimental programs to gather supporting experimental insight and data critical to model development and validation.
:
- PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related field
- Minimum typical experience of 3 – 4 years in modeling after PhD completion gained in industrial R&D setting or in partnership with industry.
- Experience with LS-DYNA, ABAQUS, ANSYS, Comsol or other commercial FE software, as well as in some of the following:
- Multiphysics modeling e.g., fully and sequentially coupled models and / or computational fluid dynamics.
- Programming languages, e.g., FORTRAN, C, C++, VB, Python, R.
- FE Pre/post processors (e.g., Hypermesh, ANSA etc.) and user subroutines.
- Machine learning and data-driven approaches.
- We particularly seek candidates who combine strong modeling skills with specialized capabilities in the following example areas:
- Mechanical behavior of metals, in particular forming, damage and fracture of aluminum alloys;
- Metallurgy of aluminum alloys;
- Use of experiments for model validation;
- Advanced constitutive models of metal plasticity and their use in FE simulations.
- Experience in application of data science and machine learning to complement physics-based approaches like FE modeling would be an advantage.
- Technical leadership experience in R&D setting with demonstration of strong project management.
- Broad science and engineering background and ability to connect knowledge across multiple disciplines.
- Capability to thrive in team environment, communicate well, engage, and influence a wide variety of stakeholders throughout organization.
- International outlook and desire to travel to other Novelis or customer locations.
