PhD position "Carbone interphases in SiC/SiC composites"

Submitted by Vladislav Yastrebov on

We are looking for PhD candidates to study interfaces in SiC/SiC fiber composites. The project is in collaboration with CEA and Centre des Matériaux, MINES ParisTech under the supervision of Marie-Hélène Berger (MINES ParisTech), Cédric Sauder (DMN/SRMA/LTMEX) and Sylvie Poissonnet (DMN/SRMP).

Title : "Influence of Carbone interphases in SiC/SiC composites based on Hi-Nicalon S and Tyranno SA3 fibers"

Abstract

A new concept of SiC/SiC pin cladding patented by the CEA (“sandwich” concept) allows making this material a reference for GFR (Gas Fast Reactor). Optimization of mechanical behaviour of such composite is still a major concern from room temperature up to very high temperature. More, comprehension of phenomena governing fiber/matrix bonding is needed in SiC/SiC composite with Pyrocarbon interphase. A recent study demonstrated influences of fiber surface properties on composite mechanical behaviour. The aim of this work is to pursue this study with the objective of a better understanding of observed phenomena. Even if influence of fiber rugosities have been demonstrated, composition and microstructure influence of carbon phases present in this material is still a major concern. This work will be dedicated to a fine analysis of carbon interfaces to reach their origins and interactions. The final goal is to establish the mechanisms that control mechanical behaviour of SiC/SiC composites and thus to define the optimized materials for nuclear applications.
