Postdoctoral Fellow in Origami Materials at McGill University

I am seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on origami metamaterials in the Architected Metamaterials Group at McGill University (https://pasinigroup.mcgill.ca/). Our group works at the crossroads of mechanics, physics, and theoretical/computational modelling, developing morphable, multistable, and multifunctional metamaterials whose macroscopic behaviour emerges not only from the constitutive law of the base material but especially from the geometry and kinematics of its underlying architecture, such as their folding patterns, degrees of freedom, and developability constraints that turn a flat sheet into a reconfigurable structure.

The position is tied to a project with a strong emphasis on fabrication and experiments, while leaving room to explore novel theoretical approaches. It is initially available for one year, with a possible extension based on performance and funding.

The role

The successful candidate will drive research on origami metamaterials, combining hands-on fabrication with rigorous mechanical testing and predictive modelling. We are looking for a well-rounded researcher with demonstrated expertise spanning:

  • Manufacturing: hands-on fabrication of origami-inspired materials and structures, including folding-pattern design, material selection, and scalable production methods for architected geometries.
  • Testing: mechanical characterization of foldable and deployable structures, including dynamic and impact loading, cyclic fatigue, and validation of structural performance against relevant standards and theoretical predictions.
  • Modelling: theoretical and computational modelling of origami mechanics (e.g., bar-and-hinge, rigid-panel, or continuum shell models) to guide design and interpret experimental results.

What we're looking for

  • A strong publication record in origami mechanics, physics, folding fabrication methods, or a closely related field;
  • A demonstrated ability to bridge fabrication, experiment, and simulation within a single research project;
  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
