The Rodney Hill Prize for 2012 is awarded to Professor Huajian Gao of Brown University, USA.

This prize, which consists of a plaque and a check for $25,000 (twenty-five thousand US Dollars), is to be awarded in recognition of outstanding research in the field of solid mechanics. The prize is to be awarded every 4 years, to coincide with the quadrennial International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM). The first prize was awarded at ICTAM 2008 in Adelaide.

Professor Gao receives the prize for his deep and broad scientific achievements in basic solid mechanics and its bridge to other fields, which has re-defined the modern frontiers of mechanics research. His work includes fundamental theory as well as applications to materials science, nanotechnology, and bioengineering. His highly cited publications appear not only in the major solid mechanics journals but also in many high-profile, cross-disciplinary journals.

The Rodney Hill Prize is founded and sponsored by Elsevier Limited, awarded under the auspices of IUTAM.  The announcement is on the website of ICTAM2012: http://www.ictam2012.org/?p=2619

Update added on 25 January 2012:  The annoucement is made on this Elsevier site.

For the little we have collaborated together unfortunately (at Max Planck), I am very glad that I know the man, the scientist, the friend Huajian. He is an example in each of these categories, I have to think very hard to find anything but the highest qualities in this man, very warm and hospitable also with his wonderful family.   If I may have a complain, the chinese resturants he invited me too in Stuttgart, were not always the same for me as a healthy pizza :)
