Despite being commonly credited with initiating the field of cavitation in elastomers, the famed poker-chip experiments of Gent and Lindley (1959) have yet to be fully explained. One likely reason for their elusiveness is that it had long been presumed that cavitation in elastomers was a phenomenon that could be explained solely on the basis of the elasticity of the elastomer at hand.
I am looking for a PhD candidate who will be sponsered by my Institute to work in the area of fracture mechanics.
ABAQUS experience would be an advantage and concepts in fracture mechanics and finite elements will be desirable.

IHPC is seeking a highly motivated research scientist to conduct research in computational thermal analysis for composite materials. The project focuses on developing a numerical simulation platform for polymer matrix composite thermal simulation under various external heat load and conduct optimization for industrial design purpose.

A computational model for arbitrary brittle crack propagation, in a fault-like layer within a 3-d
elastic domain, and its associated quasi-static and dynamic fields is developed and analyzed. It
uses an FFT-based solver for the balance of linear momentum and a Godunov-type projection-evolution
method for the crack evolution equation. As applications, we explore the questions of equilibria
and irreversibility for crack propagation with and without surface energy, existence of strength
and toughness criteria, crack propagation under quasi-static and dynamic conditions,
including Modes I, II and III, as well as multiaxial compressive loadings.
