A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the mechanics of failure of adhesive joints. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
Photo-chromic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) is a type of smart materials which are sensitive to light. Here we harness its photo-mechanical response to flexibly control surface patterning, through modeling a film involving homeotropic nematic liquid crystals with director perpendicular to the polymer film attached on a compliant substrate. Theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted to explore the surface instability of such film/substrate systems under both uniform and non-uniform illuminations by ultraviolet (UV) light, respectively.

We are organizing a mini-symposium on Multiphysics Modeling of Cells and Tissues at the World Congress in Computational Mechanics (WCCM 2018).
Last year we published a paper titled “Electromechanical Catastrophe”. I am planning to give a lecture on this topic in my course on Advanced Elasticity. The mathematics of catastrophe is old, but can be used more widely.

It is a great honor for me to receive the Timoshenko Medal. In particular I am very impressed when I look at the names of those who got it before me. Many thanks to those who have nominated me, and to those who have selected me for this honor.
A PhD position or a Post-Doc position, depending on the candidate skills are available in the Department of Sciences and Methods fo Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. The research project is in the smart composite materials design. The candidate will have to design and optimize a composite structure with embedded SMA for morphing application. Candidates should have possibly a strong background in mechanics, finite elements simulations and smart materials.
