    Influence of Interfacial Delamination on Channel Cracking of Brittle Thin Films


    H. Mei, Y. Pang, and R. Huang, International Journal of Fracture 148, 331-342 (2007).

    Following a previous effort published in MRS Proceedings, we wrote a journal article of the same title, with more numerical results. While the main conclusions stay the same, a few subtle points are noted in this paper.

    Research Highlight: Graphene Oxide Paper

    In a paper published July 26 in the journal Nature, researchers led by Rod Ruoff, John Evans Professor of Nanoengineering in the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, report on the development of "graphene oxide paper."

    Thin films: wrinkling vs buckle-delamination

    H. Mei, J.Y. Chung, H.-H. Yu, C.M. Stafford, and R. Huang, Buckling modes of elastic thin films on elastic substrates. Applied Physics Letters 90, 151902 (2007).

    Two modes of thin film buckling are commonly observed, one with interface delamination (e.g., telephone cord blisters) and the other with no delamination (i.e., wrinkling). Which one would occur for your film?

    EM 397 Thin Film Mechanics Term Paper

    Each student completes a term paper of selected topics that (a) addresses a phenomenon in thin film materials, and (b) involves analyses using mechanics. The project contributes 25% of the grade, distributed as follows:

    • 5%: November 30 (Thursday). Post your title and abstract in iMechanica, formated as below
    1. Title (EM 397 Term Paper: e.g., Dislocations in Epitaxial Thin Films).
    2. Tags (EM 397, Fall 2006, University of Texas at Austin, thin films, term paper)
    3. Body: (i) Describe the phenomenon. (ii) Explain how mechanics is relevant. (iii) Cite at least 1 journal article.
    • 10%: December 12 Tuesday (2:00-4:00 pm). 30 minute presentation. Use power point slides.

    ASME Technical Committee on Integrated Structures

    In response to a proposal by Zhigang Suo in November 2005, the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division (AMD) of ASME has created a new Technical Committee on Integrated Structures. The main purpose is to provide a home at AMD for those who are working in the interdisciplinary areas involving applied mechanics and integrated materials/structures such as microelectronics and biomedical technologies. Read more here.

    To forge the link between academia and industries, the committee will be co-chaired by industrial and academic members. For the first year, Jun He of Intel and Rui Huang (myself) have served as the co-chairs. As the 2006 ASME Congress (November 5-10) coming around the corner, we would like to draw your attention to our first activities at the congress.

    2006 American Academy of Mechanics awards - Call for nominations

    The American Academy of Mechanics calls for nominations for two awards from its members:

    The 2006 American Academy of Mechanics Outstanding Service Award

    Preliminary nominations should consist of a one-page letter describing the outstanding service of the nominee to the Academy as well as to the profession, along with a one-page biographical sketch of the nominee, together with the names of at least three people willing to write letters of support in the event that the Awards Committee requests them.

    Surface effects on thin film wrinkling

    A recent discussion here about the effect of surface stress on vibrations of microcantilever has gained some interest from our members. A few years ago, Zhigang and I looked at surface effect on buckling of a thin elastic film on a viscous layer (Huang and Suo, Thin Solid Films 429, 273-281, 2003). Although the physical phenomena (buckling vs vibrations) are different, the conclusion is quite consistent with Wei Hong and Pradeep's comments toward the end of the discussion. That is, surface stress only contributes as a residual stress and thus does not affect the buckling wavelength (frequency in space in analogy to frequency in time for vibrations).

    From students' perspective

    I like to keep the mindset of being a student, learning from all sources on all topics I am interested. Recently I have learned quite a lot about mechanics and mechanicians from Applied Mechanics News and its sister blogs and now iMechanica.

    With a job as an assistant professor, I always try to motivate my students to become future mechanicians. For this reason, I started Modeling Place as a group blog in January and gently forced my students to participate. Out of the five students I have, two actively participate by posting frequently, two occasionally post, and one dropped out quickly after one post. Together, the blog has been doing reasonably well, in terms of both quantity and quality of posts.

    I learned a few tricks in handling images and got to know some interesting works in the general area of mechanics. How about the students? What benefits have they received? I have to ask them. For one, I awarded one student with a little gift as the best post of the semester. More importantly, I believe that they are reading more than they used to do, thus gaining broader knowledge and interest in mechanics and related science. They not only read the posts in the blog but also read from other sources (online or not) to find something to post. Furthermore, they have a place to practice writing. It is a big step from reading to writing, not only for foreign students I think.

    It may be still too soon to tell how well this works, but the students themselves should be able to tell us more. If you are a student, I encourage you to comment on this to tell the professors what you like or don't like about iMechanica. At this stage of development, much more features and benefits can be accomodated. Your ideas could shape the future of iMechanica and benefit all students and those considering themselves as students of life.

    EPN - E-print Network

    I was notified today that my Web site (http://www.ae.utexas.edu/~ruihuang/) has been included in the E-print Network (EPN). EPN is a fast-growing searchable scientific network of over 20,000 Web sites containing research conducted by researchers - from Nobel Laureates to post-doctoral students - who are offering e-prints of their work via the Internet.

    Developed by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) to facilitate the needs of the Department of Energy (DOE) research community, E-print Network enhances dissemination of important research and helps to create opportunities for productive professional contacts.

    E-print Network indexes over 900,000 e-prints. Most documents included in the network are recent scientific literature. Functions available to users include conducting full-text searches, searching for documents by contributing author, establishing a personalized alert service to keep abreast of new e-prints, and exploring laboratory Web sites for further details about selected research programs.

    Once users find a paper of interest, they can download it from the site hosting the paper. This way you control distribution of your e-prints and can more readily track Web interest in your papers.
