XFEM vs Mesh free methods

Submitted by bruno-page on

I understand that the principle of XFEM is enrichment:

XFEM is a local partition of unity (PUM) enriched finite element method. By local, it means that only a region near

the discontinuities such as cracks, holes, material interfaces are enriched. The most important concept in this

method is "enrichment" which means that the displacement approximation is enriched (incorporated) by additional

problem-specific functions.

Similarly-what is the principle of mesh free methods?

Very fundamental questions on XFEM

Submitted by bruno-page on

1)XFEM is suitable in simulatng crack propogation problem because using conventional FEM this

would have required repeated meshing. This is what I've read in most introductory chapters regarding XFEM but what is

its application beyond crack propogation studies?

2)Parttion of unity framework:The main idea is to construct basis functions as products of piecewise shape functions

and local enriched basis functions. But my question is how the concept works in exactly smulating the requirement of

RBF to build a shape function, does it really make a compact support shape function ?

Hi

I am trying to build a shape function shape function using compatly supported RBF.

The system i am solving is:

Kij B  *   λ  = I

BT 0      μ     0

Where K is the RBF,  Kij - Kji = K (|| xi - xj  ||) , B is the base [1 x y]

CosmosWorks or other simulation software?

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica

I was wondering whether CosmosWorks could help me solve this ( node/5016 ) ?

I prefer to stay with SolidWorks because I already use it for 3D modeling so I guess it will be easier to learn,

but if necessary I would also consider software like Simulink.

What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

hydraulically fracturing Modelling

Submitted by Yongnuan.Liu on

Hi All

I am looking for a tool/software to model hydraulically fracturing process in sandstone reservoir. The modelling will have the following main features

- coupled fracture propagation with flow inside the fractures and flow leakage from fracture to sandstone matrix

-Interaction between hydraulic fractures and natual fracture

Thanks for any suggestion and help.

Phonon Dispersion Relations from MD simulation

How does one calculate the phonon dispersion relations from the output of a molecular dynamics simuation?

I have successfully calculated the complete phonon density of states using a fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function, but I am still confused as to how to calculate the particular phonon dispersion curves.

Thank you.

Boat simulation-how to define the buoyancy? Can it be done in ABAQUS

Submitted by xjwang on

I am trying to model a boat sitting in the water. I want to see the stress distribution after the boat is put in the water. If I only consider the solid boat model, I need define the weight of the boat and the buoyance otherwise the boat would not be in a equilibrium. My question is that how can I define the buoyance in ABAQUS, or I have to find an alternative to define the floating force? Since the water pressure is function of depth, I think we might be able to define the pressure at different level. But I don't know if it will works fine.Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
