How to get the surface mesh of an volume mesh?

Hello everyone,

I got a question and would like to post it here.

Suppose we have a volume mesh, I am interesting in obtaining surface elements or the surface mesh of this volume mesh. 

Does anyone here know a free source tool to do this?

Or put in another way, is there a mesh generator that can generate a volume mesh exactly based on a user-defined surface mesh?

I know this can be done in Abaqus by mouse picking the surface of interest.

However, I am looking for a tool that I can use for free.

Hi,

I am tyring to learn Abaqus for my reserach work. I was easily able to work with  Abaqus CAE. However  I am not able to run Abaqus through a DOS window. Also, the tutorials mention commands like 'abaqus fetch' which do not work on the command line when I input them. It always shows an error saying that 'abaqus' is not a internal or external command,operable program or batch file. 

Can somebody help me with this? Is there any particular part of the Manual or help section that I can read to find out how to do this?

I want to calculate the number of steps,the length of each step and the heigth of bending in order to create ,from  a rectangle sheet metal(flat pattern) ,a cylindrical sheet metal with a known radius.

I know the  final radius but I do not know how many step I must bend the sheet metal and in what heught do I have to bend it.

True strain rate experiment

I am planning to perform few "true-strain-rate" experiment under compression (where the crosshead velocity is not constant sice the height of the specimen keeps decreasing/ area of cross section keeps increasing, hence requiring the velocity to decrese to attian true stress-true strain), is there any option available in Bluehill or Max software of Instron 8874to suit my requirement?  As an alternative method, are there any options for me to import my own X-Y data (either time vs position or time vs velocity) to the system so that i can perform this true strain rate testing.

Does anyone know how to execute a python function in abaqus?

 For a script, I know the folllowing command can execute the python script

abaqus cae script=myscript.py

But for a python function, how to execute it in abaqus?

Does anyone know how to execute a python function in abaqus?

If I have a python function, I can input the dimension of the structure and the generate a Abaqus model. However, I don't know how to execute this python function in Abaqus.

 For python script, it just type

abaqus cae script=myscript.py

But if it is a function, how to call it using Abaqus?
