MS/PhD RA positions, U Tennessee Knoxville, Statistical homogenization & multiscale failure analysis

rabedi's picture

I have up to 4 open positions (funded by the department of defense and other sources) for MS or PhD (preferred) students at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK). Almost certainly, I cannot hire a postdoctoral fellow. The positions should start in Fall 2022 or at the latest Spring 2023. One of the positions requires US citizenship.

All projects use Multiscale stochastic homogenization of materials using statistical volume elements (SVEs) to some extent.

Materials of choice: 3D printed materials (Ceramic, metal, and other forms useful for hypersonic applications), ductile metals (uses crystal plasticity).

The interested applicants should have a strong background in some of the following areas (Items E & F are of lower priority). I can decide which project(s) best fit your background based on your response.

A) Homogenization theory.

B) B1) Brittle failure analysis and/or B2) Ductile failure analysis: (crystal) plasticity

C) Programming (Matlab, etc., and ideally C++)

D) Numerical methods (e.g. finite element and discontinuous Galerkin methods): Formulation and/or prior software use / code development.

E) Partial differential equations (PDEs).

F) Elastodynamics or experience with any other transient PDE

Please send me an email at with the following information:

- The earliest you can start your studies with the program you are interested in (MS vs. PhD) considering visa processing time (for international students).

- Your CV or resume

- If possible, a short response to any of items A to F that applies to you. Please be very brief (less than 2-3 sentences for each item).

I will not immediately respond to your email and will contact the students who best fit these positions.
