[Call for Abstracts] 2021 APS March Meeting (virtual, March 15-19) 02.01.15 Physics of Bio-Inspired Materials (Due: October 23, 2020)

Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing a focus session on "02.01.15 Physics of Bio-Inspired Materials (DSOFT, DBIO, DPOLY) [same as 04.01.42, 01.01.54]" for the 2021 American Physical Society Meeting (March 15-19), which will be an online meeting. This session covers most of the classical and emerging research topics of bio-inspired materials.

You can see more detailed description of the session below; we have two confirmed invited speakers for this session: Prof. Pete Vukusic (University of Exeter) and Alfred J. Crosby (UMass Amherst). 

We encourage you and your group members to submit abstracts to this focus session. The deadline for submission is October 23, 2020.

Physics of Bio-inspired Materials


Description of the topic: The remarkable properties and functions of natural materials emerge upon assembly of biomolecular components into hierarchical structures. Material scientists have long been inspired by nature seeking to use bioinspired design principles to engineer materials with superior properties. Recent years have witnessed a wave of renewed interest in designing bioinspired materials and structures especially following the rapid development of modern fabrication technology, such as nanofabrication and 3D printing. For example, a number of novel top-down or bottom-up fabrication approaches have been developed to tailor materials into bioinspired structures with a variety of superior mechanical (such as ultra-lightweight, ultra-tough, ultra-strong and ultra-stretchable), optical (such as structural coloration, anti-reflection and optical lenses), thermofluidic (such as omniphobicity, water harvesting, anisotropic fluid transport), and other properties. These complex materials are typically hierarchical and multiphase, with heterogeneities, including particle and fiber inclusions, pores, internal interfaces, and gradients that impact properties, as well as multiple bonding schemes, both dynamic and covalent, offering new time and length scales for reconfiguration. Moreover, various activation mechanisms have been introduced to trigger biomimetic movements or structural deformations, thus resulting in active, adaptable and stimuli-responsive materials. Understanding the physics governing formation of novel bioinspired materials and their stimuli-responsive behaviors is the key challenge to advance their design and uncover their potential. The goal of this session is to create a platform for experts working on bioinspired materials, to discuss the underlying novel material physics across different length and time scales and its role in determining functional material properties. We expect this session will become a unique forum that not only provides the physical understanding of bioinspired materials, but also offers physical insights to advance the design of future bioinspired systems for broad applications by addressing the current scientific and technological challenges. 


Topics will include:

·                Physics of self-assembly or self-organization approaches for bioinspired materials

·                Physics of top-down and/or bottom-up approaches for making hierarchical structures

·                Physics of 3D printing of biomaterials or bioinspired structures

·                Structure-function relationships in bioinspired materials/structures

·                Physics of bioinspired load-bearing and energy-dissipative materials

·                Physics of stimuli-responsive behaviors of bioinspired materials/structures

·                Physics of bioinspired sensing and actuation

·                Physics of bioinspired surfaces and interfaces
