Saint-Gobain’s High-Performance Materials Group is a dynamic, global business with research and development activities centered in Northboro, Massachusetts (NRDC).  The Northboro operation has been a major center for materials research since 1985.  We have an outstanding record of achievement, and are committed to growth through the development of proprietary products based on novel materials and process technologies.  The 186,000-square-foot R&D Center is based in three buildings on a 26-acre site near I-290 in Northboro and has approximately 350 employees from 30 different countries.


The primary role is to perform engineering analysis and provide technical solutions to aid the development and improvement of Saint Gobain products. Specifically, this position emphasizes application of knowledge and techniques from the field of solid mechanics to solve problems involving mechanical behavior, stress, deformation and failure of materials and products.


Working within a small team of engineers the successful candidate will be comfortable applying a combination of practical engineering knowledge, theoretical background and computational skills to address industrial problems spanning a wide variety of demanding applications and environments. Effective, proactive communication with customers is critical, including the ability to present technical results and recommendations in a clear and concise manner to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences. The successful candidate will have the ability to work comfortably and flexibly in a diverse and fast moving environment.  


  • Interact with business R&D personnel to identify, analyze, and provide technical solutions to product development problems through mechanical testing, engineering simulation and analysis in the field of solid mechanics.

  • Emphasis on application of mechanics of materials, finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, material constitutive behaviors, thermo-mechanical analysis, and related testing methods to evaluate and improve product performance.

  • Identify and apply appropriate experimental and simulation methods to enhance understanding of the thermo-mechanical behavior of Saint-Gobain materials and products and to predict the performance of Saint-Gobain materials and products in customer applications.

  • Perform numerical QA and experimental validation to ensure accuracy of analysis results. Interpret and synthesize the analysis and test results. Present to and discuss with customers, recommend and follow through with solutions.

  • Encapsulate numerical models into user-friendly computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools and systems that can be deployed to engineering teams.

  • Develop experimental methods and data analysis for high quality material characterization and product performance testing.

  • Follow and evaluate new advances in the field and actively introduce relevant new technologies into the company. Identify opportunities where state-of-art experimental and simulation methods could bring added value to Saint-Gobain businesses and develop “proof-of-concept” demonstrations.

  • Work with business R&D personnel to develop project SMART objective, approach, and deliverables.

  • Manage projects to ensure the on time delivery of high quality results appropriate to the project goals.

  • Report and document the analysis method, data, result, and conclusion as presentations and technical memos.


  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years of experience or MS with 3+ years of experience plus demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments or an entry level PhD, in Mechanical/Aerospace/Civil/ Materials Engineering/Applied Physics or related fields.

  • Strong background in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, heat transfer, and numerical methods.

  •  Prior experience with commercial finite element analysis software such as Abaqus/ Ansys is required.

  • Knowledge of stress wave analysis, thin film mechanics, multi-scale analysis and heat transfer is desired, as is training and experience with material mechanical property characterization and mechanical testing.  Proficiency programming in Python/C++/Fortran is also desired.

  • The ability to communicate effectively (in writing and orally) and presentation skills are critical.
