Multiobjective and Multidecision algorithms for sustainable design of buildings

Submitted by ahabbal on

Scientific context:
Building industry has to face more and more stringent requirements, including energy performance, structural safety and environmental impact. To this end, new materials and new technologies have emerged to help the construction firms meet these requirements. At the same time, many different teams or firms interact, most of the interaction being of non-cooperative nature.
The mission of the internship is to model such situations of performing optimal design of building components in a multiobjective, concurrent framework. The physical model itself is a simple one-room geometry, with a few components (door, window, heater, walls, daylight, etc) and objectives are observation criteria obtained through simple heat transfer/structural simulations or by means of an even simpler Bill-of-Quantity (BoQ) model.
Our aim is to provide civil engineers with a computational tool that could help them to assess the impact of the use of a class of material (e.g. steel) instead of another (e.g. concrete) on the different costs of the building (a Pareto Front), and help select remarkable/stable solutions (through rational games equilibria).

Job description:
Considering a reference case study (a flat composed of one partially equipped room) the main task of the intern is to define, implement and validate different scenarii involving many design variables, many objective functionals and many decision makers.
The candidate will develop and validate optimization modules, in close collaboration with our software developers working on interactive visualization of building performances.

Requirements:
– Last year of MSc (Master 2) or Engineering school in Mathematics, Civil Engineering or related disciplines.
– Scientific background on Modeling and/or numerical optimization and computer simulations.
– Matlab or scilab programming.
