Haythornthwaite Foundation/AMD - 2014 Student Travel Awards

The Applied Mechanics Division, Executive Committee continues to seek ways to involve and encourage younger members and particularly graduate students in the activities of the AMD Division.   Through the generous annual support of The Robert M. and Mary Haythornthwaite Foundation 10 travel grants were awarded in 2014. These travel grants are offered to U.S. graduate students currently enrolled at U.S. universities or collegespresenting a paper in any field of applied mechanics.  The awardees were:

Fionnuala Connolly:  Harvard University - Modeling and Design of Fiber-Reinforced Soft Actuators

Himani Agrawal: University of Houston  - How and Why does HIV Fusion Peptide Soften the T-Cell Membrane?

Huanyu Cheng: Northwestern University  - Elastomer Surface with Directionally Dependent Adhesion Strength

Jianyu Li: Harvard University  - Model of Ideal Elastomeric Gels for Polyelectrolyte Gels: Theory and Experiment

Johannes T.B. Overvelde: Harvard University  -  Harnessing Instability in Soft Actuators

Judith Alice Brown: North Carolina State University  - Modeling of Laser Interactions and Microstructural Behavior of Energetic Systems

Kedar Kirane: Northwestern University - Constitutive Damage Model for Sub-critical Fatigue Crack Growth and Size Effect in Isotropic Quasibrittle Materials

Michael Pinto:  University of Rhode Island -  Dynamic Hydrostatic Implosion of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Tubes: Shock Energy and Failure Modes

Pratik Sarker:  University of New Orleans   -  Analysis of the Residual Stress and Deformation in a Steel Tube due to Quenching Process Using Different Media

Sana Krichen: University of Houston  -  Modification of Helfrich Hamiltonian in the Presence of Proteins

Applied Mechanics Division - 2014 Student Paper Competition

The Applied Mechanics Division encourages the involvement of graduate students in the activities of the AMD Division.  One of the ways is the sponsorship of the annual Student Paper Competition.  The recipient of this prize was chosen from the Haythornthwaite Student Travel contest award pool sponsored by the Haythornthwaite Foundation. The winner was:

Huanyu Cheng: Northwestern University  -  Elastomer Surface with Directionally Dependent Adhesion Strength
