Abstract

Polyelectrolyte hydrogels encompass complex multiphysical interactions between mechanics and electrochemistry. In this talk, I will present a thermodynamically-consistent coupled theory and computational method for reactive polyelectrolyte hydrogels.

The computational framework will be utilized to study transient stimuli-responsive behaviors of polyelectrolyte hydrogels under different chemo-mechanical conditions. Specifically, I will illustrate how solution salinity and presence of reactive molecules in the external solution can drive large degree of swelling of polyelectrolyte hydrogels and how we could exploit these phenomena to design actuators for soft robotics applications

About the Speaker

Dr. Bibekananda Datta is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2025 where his dissertation was on coupled multiphysics modeling and simulations of thermo-responsive and polyelectrolyte hydrogels.

His research interest spans inverse characterization of materials, coupled multiphysics theory and computation of materials, constitutive modeling of materials under extreme conditions based on micromechanics.
