We are recruiting three exceptional postdoctoral researchers to join a highly collaborative computational modeling team collaboratively led by Prof. Noelia Grande Gutiérrez (Carnegie Mellon University), Prof. Emma Lejeune (Boston University), and Prof. David Nordsletten (University of Michigan). As part of the Wellcome Leap VISIBLE project VISIBLE-MAP, our goal is to develop a new generation of multiscale computational models that connect microstructural tissue mechanics, microvascular flow and transport, and tissue function, spanning both in vivo human tissue and in vitro engineered tissue systems. The project brings together complementary expertise in computational biomechanics, cardiovascular mechanics, multiscale and patient-specific modeling, fluid mechanics and transport, machine learning, and quantitative image analysis, providing a unique environment for developing new approaches at the interface of engineering, computation, imaging, and cardiovascular medicine.
We seek creative, ambitious, and highly collaborative researchers with strong backgrounds in computational engineering, applied mathematics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or related disciplines. Particularly relevant experience includes finite-element or computational mechanics, computational fluid dynamics and transport, multiscale or multiphysics modeling, scientific machine learning, computer vision and biomedical image analysis, parameter estimation, and integration of experimental or clinical imaging data with computational models. Candidates need not have expertise across all of these areas; rather, we are seeking individuals with deep expertise in one or more areas and enthusiasm for working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Successful candidates will have an excellent research record, demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, strong scientific communication skills, and a commitment to collaborative and reproducible science.
These two-year postdoctoral positions offer an unusual opportunity to work as part of a tightly integrated team spanning the University of Michigan, Boston University, and Carnegie Mellon University, while participating in the broader Wellcome Leap VISIBLE-MAP team (lead by Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic and Chris Chen). Fellows will collaborate closely with one another and with experimental, computational, and clinical investigators to develop models capable of connecting tissue microstructure and local mechanical and transport processes to emergent tissue-level function. We particularly encourage applicants interested in developing fundamentally new computational methods with direct biological and translational impact. The positions are ideally suited to researchers seeking to establish an independent research trajectory at the intersection of computational science, biomechanics, imaging, and cardiovascular medicine while contributing to an ambitious international effort to transform our understanding of coronary microvascular disease.
