How do you add springs or trusses to an orphan mesh (imported mesh) in Abaqus?

Hello,I am a new user to Abaqus.  I created an FE mesh of the human neck using a different software, and successfully imported the .inp file into Abaqus.  I need to create either spring or truss elements to the mesh, and I am not sure how to do this, any thoughts?  Every time I try to add components, I get an error saying that you can’t change geometry to an orphan mesh.  Thanks

So, I won't be able to use springs since the mat'l is non-linear.  I have created truss sections and assigned them to elements created in sets and assigned to section assignments.  The only thing is I am not able to see the truss elements.  When I do a query on beam/truss, it says that the part dosn't contain any.  I am trying to add truss elements to an imported orphan mesh, any help would be greatly appreciated.
