Modelling crack in Ansys with interface elements

Modeling Crack with interface elements in ANSYS

Hi Every body

I am Dhaneshwar Mishra, a PhD student working in the area of fracture mechanics, basically fracture failure of interfaces of bimaterial, composite layers etc. I am regular reader of IMechanica and got lots of insights by reading different postings on it. I am trying to model the interface in ANSYS 10.0 with their Interface element INTER204. While searching this element in Ansys element library, i could not find it. Will some body guide me to model interface of composite layers using the concept of cohesive zone modelling?

I'd also like to know what people have experience while trying out ANSYS's cohesive zone capabilities.  The INTER204 element is available in Ansys v11.  I need to model mode II and combined mode I + mode II.  But so far my experience hasn't been great.

Hi

 As I mentioned beforehand, I am MSC student of Naval Architect, my thesis is about crack propagation in ship structure, I generated the central crack for Mode I, and got some resolt about stress intensity factor, and plastic zone around the crack. could you please let me know about your model in Mode II and any information about crack modeling in Ansys v11.0 via interface elements?

Hi Biswajit,you write your experience with cohesive Zones "hasn't been great" so far. What do you mean specifically?I've done several simple tests on a single CZ element but were not always able to comprehend its traction-separation response. It seems to depend strongly on time increment, contact stiffness and whatever else.I wonder if your experience was similar?Regards,Oleg

Hi,

 

I would like to know where can i get some help/ tutorial on using ANSYS to model cohesive zone,

I'm an undergraduate student currently working on my thesis on something related to rotor design. I had just started using ANSYS little more than 2weeks ago. 

I would be really grateful if anyone can post a link etc to some tutorials on cohesive zone

i am trying to use interface elements (INTER2XX) in my analysis of fiber matrix interface study. i was able to generate CZMESH after some difficulty. Now in solution pahase my solution is not converging. Can you help me in this regard

Hi Mishra,

         i am working on simulating the fiber matrix interface in ansys using its interface elements. After successfuly generating the mesh with interface elements, now i am facing solution convergence problems. I have tried few things in SOLUTION OPTIONS but to noavail. Can u help me in this regard,
