1 PhD position in Real time brain-perfusion simulation for Acute Ischemic Stroke using machine learning-based reduced order modelling
Objective: the objective of this doctoral position is to develop a real-time model of brain perfusion, by coupling a 1D-FSI model of blood flow with a 3D brain model of brain perfusion. Acceleration of the computation will be carried out using machine learning based reduced order modelling, leveraging from current work carried out at by the supervisors at CIS. Once available, the model will be coupled with additional models to provide a decision support tool for Acute Ischemic Stroke treatment.
Context: the student will be enrolled in the PhD program of University of Lyon at Mines Saint-Etienne, France. Specifically, the thesis will take place at Centre Ingénierie et Santé (CIS), which conducts major international research projects in different biomedical engineering fields. The candidate will be part of a strong research group with a solid track record in cardiovascular biomechanics, with two ERC projects awarded in the past (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/647067, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/638804) and one on-going Marie Curie ITN project (https://meditate-project.eu/ ). The project will involve an on-going collaboration with the interventional neuroradiology department of the Saint Étienne University Hospital.
Eligibility and conditions: The project is planned to start on September 2021. Funding is available for 3 years with an annual gross salary of 21.100 euros. Both French and International students are eligible. Students should have, on the date of the start of the project, master level studies allowing them to start a PhD.
Candidate profile: Candidates with strong skills in computational mechanics and programming are expected. Previous knowledge of machine learning algorithms is a plus. Motivation and interest in bioengineering applications is recommended.
How to apply: Send CV, cover letter, BSc and MSc degrees and letters of recommendation to miquel.aguirre@emse.fr and avril@emse.fr with the subject "PhD Position 2021". Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as the call will close once the position is filled.
