Extraordinary properties of CNTs revealed, seeking experimental verification

Submitted by Zhiliang Zhang on

In two recent papers, one published at SMALL and another one at JACS, we found that helical carbon nanotubes with intentionally incorporated non-hexagonal defects display unexpected high toughness and plasticity, approaching 5000 J/g with decreasing spring radius, in addition to the well-recognized extreme elasticity. We also show that the tightly wound helical carbon nanotubes exhibit giant stretchability and superior reversibility as well as pronounced hysteresis loops. We are seeking cooperation with groups who can do the experiments.
