The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position, which will be available at the start of the 2012-2013 academic year. The position will be at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor.

The department seeks outstanding individuals working in the broad areas of health or energy. Examples of opportunities in the energy area include, but are not limited to: energy harvesting and conversion from renewable resources; sustainable energy storage solutions; materials and mechanics for sustainable energy; and nature-inspired processes for energy solutions. In the area of health, example prospects include sensing and actuation; early cancer detection and treatment; multi-sensory control; bio-inspired robotics and devices; soft robotics; multi-scale modeling; molecular-scale design; and novel multi-functional materials. We emphasize that our search is not limited to just these topics. While we often seek individuals whose work creates synergies within existing areas of strength in the department and the university, we place much greater emphasis on a candidate's potential and promise than we do on the precise area of technical specialization. As such, we encourage all well qualified candidates to apply.

He/she will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, to advise graduate students during the pursuit of their degrees, and to develop a highly visible externally-funded research program. An earned PhD or ScD in mechanical engineering or in an appropriate engineering or related discipline is required.
