Focused Section on Mechanics of Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, …) have received significant attention from the academia and industry in the past two decades owing to their superior material properties. Mechanicians have played a major role in the fundamental understanding of the mechanical properties of carbon nanomaterials, and in their wide-range applications. 

Dr. Asha Nurse from NIST will receive the inaugural Journal of Applied Mechanics Award.

Dr. Asha Nurse from NIST will receive the inaugural Journal of Applied Mechanics Award for her paper "A model of force generation in a three-dimensional toroidal cluster of cells" (Journal of Applied Mechanics, v 79, article 051013, 2012).

The Journal of Applied Mechanics Award is provided by the Applied
Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to honor the
best paper which has been published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics during
the two calendar years immediately preceding the year of the award. The award
will be made annually to the corresponding author of the paper who received their
Ph.D. no more than 10 years prior to July 1 of the year of award. Corresponding
authors who have yet to receive a Ph.D. may also be considered. The award will

Professor Ares Rosakis will receive the 2013 Theocaris Award from Society of Experimental Mechanics

Ares J. Rosakis, Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at Caltech, is the recipient of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) 2013 P.S. Theocaris Award.  This award recognizes a senior professional who is a Fellow of SEM and who has conducted outstanding research throughout his career in the field of experimental mechanics.

In addition to the ASME awards related to the Applied Mechanics Division, some prestigious society awards will be given to mechanicians at the IMECE, Houston, Texas, in November 2012.

Professor Jan Achenbach  of Northwestern University will receive the ASME Medal.  [ASME Medal, established in 1920, is the highest award that the Society can bestow and is to recognize “eminently distinguished engineering achievement.”  Only one ASME Medal may be awarded annually.]

French Republic Knights Professor Ravichandran

G. Ravichandran, John E. Goode, Jr. Professor of Aerospace and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories (GALCIT) has been selected to receive the Chevalier de l'ordre des Palmes Académiques, which is the Knight grade of the French Republic's Order of Academic Palms. Founded by Napoleon in 1808 to honor educators and scholars,  this distinction recognizes eminent personalities who have made significant contributions to the development of French culture, science, and education.

National Research Council ranks the doctoral programs of universities in the States every ten years.  The new ranking just came out.  Here are the results for mechanicsl engineering and civil engineering.
