Simulation-based numerical optimization of arc welding process for reduced distortion in welded structures

This paper presents an effective numerical approach for welding process
parameter optimization to minimize weld-induced distortion in
structures. A numerical optimization framework based on coupled Genetic
Algorithm (GA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is developed and
implemented for a low and a high fidelity model. Classical weakly
coupled thermo-mechanical analysis with thermo-elasto-plastic
assumptions is carried out for distortion prediction of numerical
models. The search for optimum process parameters is executed by direct
integration of numerical models and GA-based optimization technique. The
developed framework automatically inserts the process parameters into
the simulation models, executes the FE-based welding simulations and

We (the NanoBIO Node at Illinois ) have a preliminary release of an online finite element analysis of nanoindentation (indentation) tool using FEAP

This preliminary release is limited to linear elastic material, axisymmetric geometry, spherical rigid indenter, and various boundary conditions.

This project aims at improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process of MEMS while decreasing the production cost by considering at the design stage the uncertainties in such a way that a range of the MEMS properties can be predicted for the manufactured products, which will be immune to factors that could adversely affect performance. Hi everybody,

 I am a very beginnerin doing research :-) and my topic is about "micro indentation analysis using continuum dislocation theory". I am applying high-order finite element method for this nonlinear problem.

My plan is first writing a subroutine for the element. However, when I intend to compute the internal force by using Gauss integration, I see a problem with the integrand function of some index of the internal force vector. This integrand is discontinuous function. It is therefore, I cannot get a good approximation with the standard Gauss integration.

Strain Gradient Plasticity

Hi all,

I have a strange question that has puzzled me since last almost one year.

There are many SG-plasticity models in the technical literature, sometimes categorized as lower-order or higher-order models.

The problem is :

the constitutive models include the gradient of plastic parameters (e.g. plastic slip).

PBC implementation in equilibrium equation

Hi, guys,

 Do some of you know how Periodical Boundary Condition is implemented in equilibrium equation while using FEM:

div{ C:sym[grad(u)] } = 0 ,where the displacement u is periodical.

Is there any (detailed) documentation about this stuff?

Spectral Element Method Mesher

Hi,

Is there a free/open-source mesher for the Spectral Element Method?

I know some researchers use conventional mesher with order 3 elements and then include more nodes in the meshes (but without improve the geometric interpolation).
