Crack length in fracture mechanics

Free Tags:

Hi,

Could please any one knows give me an idea about solving a problem which I face for the ages.

I have modelled a beam with a sharp edge at the corner of a rectangular hole with ABAQUS. I have introduced different crack length and using LEFM, I have made some predictions for the failure load of the beam. Now the predicted load is dependent on the crack length. How can I chooose the right crack length?

Thank you

FEMhub: Scientific computing for the rest of us

I came across a wonderful site a couple of weeks ago. nb.femhub.com

FEMhub is still at its beginning stage, but it can already do lots of interesting stuff. For someone like me who teaches numerical/computer methods in engineering at a developing country where computing is costly, tools like FEMhub are very much welcome.

More about FEMhub on my website. Try out the example worksheets and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Open Source Software Repositories

I will be setting up an open source project for parallel finite element analysis in the next month or two. I am just wondering what the community's opinion is regarding the best repository to use.

SourceForge? Google Software? Others?

Your opinions are welcome.

My initial experience with VTK

I wrote my first experience of using VTK with my hp-FEM code here.  This is only with linear tetrahedra. To use VTK for high-order elements seem formidable, altough there's a paper that describes how it can be done. If anyone has experiences with VTK in FEM, I'd love to consult with you.

Crack modeling

hi.

I want to model a " Two cracks in infinete plate in ansys" but it is possible to use one quarter point element at a time.

please help me how to model two cracks in ansys or  if it is easily possible in abaqus then also i am interested.

thanking you

Postdoc position at HKUST on computational mechanics/geomechanics

A post-doc position is available now for one who has recently obtained (or about to get) his/her PhD on computational
geomechanics or computational mechanics. The successful candidate is expected to have strong background of mechanics
and extensive experience on computer programming (e.g., coding in FEM and/or DEM), and is able to work independently.
He/she who has previously worked on multi-scale modeling of material behavior will be particularly welcome to apply. The
initial contract is one year and is extendable to multiple years subject to his/her performance and availability of funding.

Looking for a Post-Doc position in Geomechanics, in Europe

Dear all,

My name is Adrien Haxaire. I am currently Associate Professor at LGCIE, INSA Lyon, France, until end of August. I am looking for a
Post-Doc position in geomechanics in Europe.

During my PhD, I developped a thermodynamical model capable of describing coupled THMC phenomena in unsaturated porous media. It was implemented in Cast3M.

I am very interested in chemical reactions in porous media, their modelling and implementation. I am also interested in the field of CO2 sequestration.

For Geotechnics Abaqus Users!

Hello colleagues,

Iam trying to model load test on board pile. I have already a model which is working but not as I need. I think the interaction between pile and soil is not correctly defined. Has someone an experience with this issue.? How I should define the interaction between soil and pile?

Attached .inp file.

What Platform Would You Prefer for a Software That Helps in Learning FEM---Windows or Java?

Ideally, this post of mine should carry a poll, but I guess as an ordinary user, I cannot insert one.

Currently, I am writing a small software program that is especially designed to help learn FEM. For instance, I will be providing detailed listings for every intermediate step, e.g. all those [D], [B], [k], etc. matrices for each element, as well as the final assembled global system {F} = [K]{d} and its solution separately at each Gauss point. Only linear static problems for the time being; will add transients/eigenvalue problems in near future.

Question about stochastic Finite Elements

Hi to the community !

I would like to ask if anyone have some experience with stochastic finite elements in an industrial context ?

Would you know some software (free or commercial) package for stochastic finite elements ?

Why do I have the feeling that sfem methods which look to be very promising aren't used much in practice ? Am I wrong when I say that ?

Thank you very much for any help about that !

Seeking Phd position in Mechanics / MEMS

Hello,

I am a Mechanical Engineer with a Masters from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. I have been working in various fields of Mechanical Engineering: Product development of forging components and in software development of hyper-elastic finite element software development.

FEM Is Not a Local Method (and It Isn't Global Either)

In the literature, FEM has sometimes been characterized as a local approach, but IMO this needs to be corrected.

The piecewise continuous trial-functions of FEM can be looked at from two different viewpoints:

PUFE homework exercise

As a follow-up to the discussion here, I am attaching a PUFE homework that I have assigned in 2006 and 2008 when I have offered a meshfree/pufe course. This might be of some help to those who have an interest in partition-of-unity enriched finite element methods.

The Fundamental Physical Bases of the WR Approach (and, Consequently, of FEM) in General

It has been quite some time (more than 1.5 years) that I had touched upon the topic of the physical bases of FEM in general, and of the general weighted residual (WR) approach in particular, at iMechanica (see here).

The position I then took was that there is no known physical basis at all for the WR approach---despite its loving portrayals in mathematical terms, or its popularity.

Journal Club Theme of February 2009: Finite Element Methods in Quantum Mechanics

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Welcome to the February 2009 issue. In this issue, we will discuss the use of finite elements (FEs) in quantum mechanics, with specific focus on the quantum-mechanical problem that arises in crystalline solids. We will consider the electronic structure theory based on the Kohn-Sham equations of density functional theory (KS-DFT): in real-space, Schrödinger and Poisson equations are solved in a parallelepiped unit cell with Bloch-periodic and periodic boundary conditions, respectively.

2nd spatial derivatives from isoparameteric elements

Based on my limited knowledge of FEM, I find it is difficult to use isoparametric elements for any problem whose governing
functional involve the second (or higher) partial derivatives of the unknown
functions. I hope some computational mechanicians can help me on this. Currently, I have a formulation derived from micropolar elasticity which has a functional involving second partial derivatives of the displacements. Thanks a lot for any of your suggestions.
